Multi-acquiring

Multi-acquiring explained: less dependent on a single acquirer

Multi-acquiring means your payment provider does not work with a single acquirer, but with multiple licensed acquirers. LunaPay is set up that way. For each sector we decide together whether a second acquirer stands ready as a backup from the start, and if an acquirer stops serving your sector, we move you to another licensed partner. That way your acceptance does not hang on one party's decision, even in high-risk sectors where ordinary providers back out.

First, the terms

Acquirer
The party that processes your card transaction and settles the money to your account. No acquirer, no card acceptance.
Payment service provider (PSP)
The party that connects you to acquirers and payment methods and delivers the technology. LunaPay is that connecting layer.
Payment gateway
The technology that links your checkout or terminal to the acquirers.
Failover
Switching to another route when the first one is not available.

How multi-acquiring works

The idea is simple: your acceptance does not rest on a single acquirer. What that looks like for you depends on your sector.

The transaction comes in

Your customer checks out. The transaction goes to LunaPay, and we send it to the acquirer you are signed up with.

A second acquirer as backup

For each sector we decide together whether a second acquirer stands ready from the start. If so, there is a second route when the first one is not available.

Switching when an acquirer stops

If an acquirer stops serving your sector, we move you to another licensed partner and handle the sign-up. You do not have to find a new provider yourself.

Why this is crucial for high-risk

Most providers work with a single acquirer. For an ordinary shop that is usually fine. For high-risk businesses it is not, for two reasons. First, in high-risk sectors you get refused or dropped more easily, so the chance that your only acquirer pulls out is real. Second, with a single acquirer your entire revenue stops the moment it goes down. Multi-acquiring makes you less fragile: LunaPay works with multiple licensed acquirers, so if one stops serving your sector, there is another partner to move you to. And because different acquirers accept different transactions, a second acquirer alongside can raise your acceptance rate.

The practice proves it

This is not theory. Experienced high-risk businesses often arrange this themselves. Serious dropshippers, for example, run multiple processors at once out of their own accord: if one drops their account, another keeps the orders flowing, and spreading volume prevents any single account from seeing their full dispute pressure. That principle is part of our setup: multiple licensed acquirers behind LunaPay, and for each sector a joint decision on whether a second one stands ready from the start. You do not have to arrange separate contracts and integrations for it.

Frequently asked questions

What is multi-acquiring?

A setup where your payment provider works with multiple licensed acquirers. For each sector we decide together whether a second acquirer stands ready as a backup from the start. If an acquirer stops serving your sector, we move you to another licensed partner.

What is an acquirer?

The party that processes your card transaction and settles the money to your account. With multiple acquirers you are less vulnerable.

What happens if my acquirer goes down?

If a second acquirer stands ready as a backup for your sector, we can switch to it. If an acquirer stops serving your sector, we move you to another licensed partner. How that works for your business, we agree with you beforehand.

Does multi-acquiring raise my acceptance rate?

It can. Different acquirers accept different transactions, so with a second acquirer alongside, the chance of a successful payment is higher. Whether that pays off for your sector, we look at together.

Is multi-acquiring the same as payment orchestration?

It is closely related. Payment orchestration and dynamic transaction routing are the industry terms for smartly distributing transactions across multiple acquirers.

Do I or my customer notice anything?

That depends on the situation. Moving to another acquirer takes a sign-up and registration, and we handle those. How that works for your business, we discuss beforehand, so you know where you stand.
